MTS ESL Program

An English language learner is a student whose first language is other than English or is a variety of English that is significantly different from what is used for instruction in Ontario schools.

We offer two programs:

  1. English as a Second Language (ESL) support is for students who have attended school and can read and write in their first language at an age-appropriate level;                                                                                                                                                     and
  2. English Literacy Development (ELD) support is for students who have missed all or some of their schooling or who cannot yet read and write in their first language at an age-appropriate level.

Students can take up to five ESL or ELD courses toward a secondary school diploma. Beginner-level students can take courses in different subjects created for English language learners (e.g., Math, Science, Civics/Careers, Geography, History, etc.).
